If you are not keeping track of our NH budget process … we are down to the wire. This Thursday, June 26, is the deadline and it comes in the form of an up-or-down vote. No amendments to any bills or reports are permitted … that time has passed. And yes, to top it all off, Governor Ayotte has threatened to veto the budget, unless cuts are restored.
When I said it was down to the wire I meant it. The current two-year budget expires June 30, that’s Monday. If the Governor vetoes the budget, there is no budget and if there is no budget, there is no functioning government. To keep government open long enough for new budget negotiations, the House and Senate will need some spending agreement. That will come in the form of a continuing resolution (CR). Sound familiar?? Remember the US Senate and the CR back in March?
So here is how we got here: Meet NH House Democratic Leader Rep. Alexis Simpson (D-Exeter) and listen to her explanation. What a tangled web the NH GOP weave.
Our Senator Sue Prentiss joins Rep.Simpson in articulating what’s missing in the state budget, how it does not reflect our values and how it impacts our working families coming to and thriving in our state. Watch her video.
Please call Governor Ayotte’s office and encourage her to VETO the budget should it pass the House and the Senate: 603-271-2121.
Stay tuned for the vote on Thursday!
