Grafton County Commissioner Changes Party

Just before the July 4th weekend, Wendy Piper, our Grafton County Commissioner representing Hanover, Lyme, Lebanon and Enfield decided to abandon the Democratic Party for the Republican Party via an Op-Ed in the Union-Leader.  Not only is Piper joining the Republican Party, but she is championing the success and leadership of Governor Kelly Ayotte. This announcement came as a complete surprise to everyone in her district, not to mention her total about turn in her politics.

Fallout was immediate. Valley News posted a shorter letter from Commissioner Piper with LTEs from the Grafton County delegation as well as from Enfield and West Lebanon residents.

Enfield/Mascoma Forward Democrats prepared this statement in response to Commissioner Piper’s announcement.

Democrats close to Commissioner Piper were left wondering why she hadn’t shared her decision with friends. How long had she been preparing to switch parties and what, if anything, was the final straw?

While many questions remain, it is important to recognize the contribution Commissioner Piper has made to the county over the last eight years.
