Run for Office to Defeat GOP Radical Agenda

State Rep. John Sellers, State Senator Carrie Gendreau and some of their colleagues have given us another reason why we need to be actively involved in preserving our freedoms and democracy, including considering running for office.

Sellers, who represents the 10 towns in Grafton House District 18 stretching from Enfield to Bristol, and Gendreau, who represents several Northern Grafton County towns and Coös County, introduced a radical new effort to strip away a woman’s right to make her own health care decisions by introducing a ban on abortions after just 15 DAYS!

This ban, which would include prison sentences for doctors, would be one of the most extreme in the country. Combined with attacks on the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals and on public schools, Sellers and Gendreau continue to pursue a radical agenda to deny freedom to those who disagree with them, which is the vast majority of Granite Staters.

That’s why we need individuals willing to work hard to challenge Sellers and Gendreau, and their extreme allies. Please consider stepping up to run as a candidate, whether it’s for the State Senate or State House or for an office in the county or your town. Grafton County Democrats and the state party stand ready to assist every candidate at every step of the way. If you have any interest, or even just a question, reach out to Thomas Oppel, Grafton County Democrats vice chair and the chair of our Candidate Recruitment Committee.

If you feel you personal circumstances won’t allow you to run for office this year, we still need you to be willing to walk, to knock on doors to help inform your neighbors and then make sure they turn out to vote.

Protecting our freedom, our democracy, cannot be a spectator sport.

Remembering Phil Preston 12/4/38 – 11/16/23

I’m writing to report the sad news of the passing of former New Hampshire House member Phil Preston on November 16, 2023. Phil represented Grafton House District 8 from 2006-2010
A longtime resident of Ashland, New Hampshire, Phil was a passionate advocate for the protection of New Hampshire’s beauty and natural resources, and was actively involved in a number of conservation groups, including Lakes Region Conservation Trust, Squam Lakes Association and others. Phil was a committed and dedicated House member, and represented his Grafton 8 constituents with compassion, modesty, and humility. He was always ready with a quick smile and a kind word, and was well-respected by his constituents and his colleagues in the House and Senate.

Phil was predeceased by his late wife, Margaret “Peg” Dobbie, a well-known advocate for reproductive freedom, and a former executive director of New Hampshire NARAL. Phil was a long-time member of Plymouth Area Democrats, and a valued friend to many of us in Grafton County and New Hampshire. Phil will be sorely missed.Phil Preston Obituary, (1938 – 2023) – Ashland, NH

January 23, 2024: NH Presidential Primary

There is still some confusion over the NH presidential primary. Not the date, that has been settled  January 23, 2024. The confusion lies in why Joe Biden’s name is not on the ballot.

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) determined that the first-in-the nation primary should be held in a more racially diverse state and used this argument to rearrange the presidential primary calendar, putting South Carolina first.

The problem is a New Hampshire law states that the NH primary be at least seven days before other similar events. So it comes as no surprise that New Hampshire did not accept the rearranged primary calendar and did not back down.  The January 23 date is the first presidential primary in the nation for 2024.

President Joe Biden did not file for the NH presidential primary and is not on the ballot. Interestingly enough, according to the Secretary of State Scanlan, there are 21 other Democratic candidates who have filed in the NH Democratic presidential primary,  and 24 Republicans in their primary. But not Joe Biden.1

Anger and apathy over the NH Democratic presidential primary will only help build momentum for the MAGA Republican movement. Concerned for what this means for our democracy in the November 2024 election, a grassroots group of NH citizens and community leaders is spearheading a campaign to write Joe Biden’s name on the presidential primary ballot. They are choosing to put democracy over party politics.
